Efforts to end the long-running conflict in Syria have proved elusive. There is still no date for the much anticipated and frequently delayed “Geneva II” peace talks, but on Monday Syria’s political opposition announced that it would take part in the talks, sponsored by the United States and Russia, if certain preconditions were agreed to.
Retired Ambassador Wolfgang Petritsch knows how difficult it can be to negotiate and secure lasting peace.Petritsch was the European Union’s chief negotiator at the Kosovo Peace Agreement talks and, as former high representative of the international community for Bosnia and Herzegovina, he also oversaw implementation of the Bosnia peace accords.
